Scene 24 Productions began as a culmination of a lifetime of experience in the theatrical, television and film industries. Producing artistic director Kelly F. Burr began in the industries as a child actor in commercials, movies, and regional theater. Her career took her through many elements of production, from lighting and stage management in Las Vegas to assisting the build producer on a television treehouse construction show. One thing remained clear: Women had a harder time in production. Often, other women on the job would quietly ask her for help or instruction, fearing that the men would either make fun of them or do it for them and not teach them how. It raised the question: “What might women/folx be capable of if they could give their all to their work instead of spending the energy to compete and protect themselves?”
When we produce a show, we provide the opportunity for women/folx (and sometimes dudes!) to gain experience and other opportunities in stage management, producing, technical theater, designing and directing. We get a lot of actors who want to learn extra skills to survive in the expensive and competitive New York City are and playwrights who want to produce their own work.
Scene 24 is founded on the belief that new work is essential to the survival of production, and the aim of this project is to empower as many people as possible to get out and make it.
